Does Insurance cover Acupuncture treatment?

Yes—many insurance plans now cover acupuncture, especially for conditions like chronic pain, musculoskeletal issues, and post-operative recovery. At Sanare Acupuncture, we accept most major insurance plans including CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield, Aetna, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, and VA Community Care.

Coverage may vary depending on your plan. Some insurance policies cover acupuncture in full, while others may require a copay (a fixed fee per visit) or coinsurance (a percentage of the treatment cost). Most plans also apply your deductible, which means coverage begins after you've met a certain out-of-pocket amount.

To help you navigate your benefits, we offer insurance verification before your first visit. Simply contact us with your insurance information, or fill out the form below and our team will check what’s covered and let you know about any expected costs in advance.

We DO NOT Accept:

Kaiser Permanent, Priority Partner, Well Point.

Unfortunately, Medicaid does NOT cover Acupuncture service.

1. Before Your Appointment

  • Complete Your Intake Form: Fill out your health history and intake form online or arrive 15 minutes early to complete it in person.

  • Wear Comfortable Clothing: Loose sleeves and pants allow easy access to treatment areas.

  • Eat Lightly Before Your Session: A small meal or snack is recommended—avoid coming on an empty stomach.

  • Bring Your Insurance Card: If you’d like us to verify coverage for acupuncture, please bring your insurance information.

2. During Your First Visit

Your first visit typically lasts 60–90 minutes and includes:

  • Initial Consultation: We’ll review your health history, symptoms, and wellness goals.

  • Personalized Assessment: Your practitioner may check your pulse, tongue, and posture to determine the best treatment approach.

  • Treatment Session: Fine, sterile needles are gently placed at specific points to restore balance and promote healing. Depending on your needs, your treatment may also include cupping, gua sha, heat therapy, or Massage therapy.

  • Relaxation Time: Most patients find acupuncture deeply relaxing—many even fall asleep during treatment.

3. After Your Appointment

  • Post-Treatment Care: Drink plenty of water, rest if needed, and avoid strenuous activity immediately after your session.

  • Mild Reactions: It’s normal to feel slightly tired or energized after treatment. Any minor soreness usually fades quickly.

  • Treatment Plan: We’ll discuss your recommended treatment schedule, which may be once or twice weekly depending on your goals.

Acupuncture FAQs

Does it hurt?

Most patients are pleasantly surprised at how comfortable acupuncture feels. The needles are extremely thin—about the width of a human hair—and are gently inserted into specific points on the body. You may feel a slight pinch or tingling sensation as the needle goes in, followed by a feeling of warmth, heaviness, or deep relaxation. Many patients even fall asleep during their treatment.

How many treatments do I need?

The number of treatments depends on your condition, how long you’ve had it, and your overall health. Acute conditions may improve in just a few sessions, while chronic or long-standing issues often require a series of treatments. On average, we recommend one to two sessions per week initially, then transitioning to a maintenance schedule once results are achieved. For cosmetic acupuncture, fertility, or chronic pain, we often recommend a structured treatment plan tailored to your goals.

What’s the difference between dry needling and acupuncture?

While both use thin needles, they are very different approaches.

  • Acupuncture is rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine, using specific points to restore balance, improve energy flow (Qi), and address the root cause of health concerns.

  • Dry needling is a Western physical therapy technique focused on releasing muscle trigger points for pain relief.
At Sanare Acupuncture, we practice Traditional Chinese Medicine acupuncture, which addresses both symptoms and underlying imbalances for whole-body healing.

Is acupuncture safe during pregnancy?

Yes, when performed by a licensed and experienced acupuncturist, acupuncture is safe during pregnancy and can be very beneficial. It’s often used to reduce nausea, relieve back and pelvic pain, improve sleep, and support healthy pregnancy progression. However, certain acupuncture points should be avoided during pregnancy, so it’s important to seek care from a qualified practitioner who understands these safety guidelines. At Sanare Acupuncture, we specialize in safe, gentle treatments for expectant mothers.

Experience the time-tested power of acupuncture for lasting pain relief and wellness. At Sanare Acupuncture, Dr. Jinhua Qian (Jina) combines Traditional Chinese Medicine with modern techniques to restore balance, reduce inflammation, and improve well-being. Whether you're seeking relief from chronic pain, stress, or injuries, our personalized treatments help you heal naturally.
